ExtraCurricular
Sherwood Hills include various activities and events throughout the year that provide students with the opportunity to develop and showcase their talents and gifts. Such activities and events include but are not limited to the following:
Music Performance Program
The Music Performance Program includes performance opportunities in Monday Chapel and the bi-annual student Music Recital Night. Students may perform a solo/instrumental item in Monday Chapel as part of a weekly or term rotation. Students need to be at AMEB Grade 2 Level or equivalent to be involved in the Music Performance Program. Repertoire will be selected according to the student’s extra-curricular private music lessons. Practice times will rely solely on the student’s own commitment and attendance of extra-curricular private music lesson. Rehearsals with the Music Teacher will be held at least 2 weeks before a performance. The school values the musical contributions of each of our dedicated students in our various music programs.
Primary Choir
Primary students may participate in the Primary Choir. The selection is voluntary, and auditions will be held individually between the Music Teacher and student to be able to join the Primary Choir. Auditions are held yearly at the beginning of Term 1. Involvement in the Primary Choir includes vocal training and appropriate participation on the students’ part. Primary Choir will have scheduled special items in Monday Chapel and for special school events.
High School Choir & Orchestra
High School students may participate in a representative school choir and/or orchestra. The choir selection process is stringent, and auditioning is required to be able to join the choir. Auditions are held yearly at the beginning of Term One. Involvement in the choir includes vocal training and a large commitment on the students’ part.
Students in the orchestra will be selected by the Music Teacher. Students need to be at an AMEB Grade 2 Level or equivalent based on their extra-curricular private music lessons. Other requirements that may satisfy the selection criteria include completion of the Year 8 Music course or Stage 5 Music Elective course at the discretion of the Music Teacher. Involvement in the orchestra includes a moderate level of note reading and a large commitment on the students’ part.
The choir and orchestra will have scheduled specials in the Monday Chapel and for special school events.
Bake Sale Fundraiser
Each year the Year 12 students organize a Bake Sale Fundraiser to raise funds for their end of year Graduation Dinner event. School families are invited to donate baked goods, such as cookies, cupcakes, slices, or brownies. Students are responsible for the setup and coordination of the event, which is held on school grounds. Staff and students appreciate the ongoing support for this event each year.
Aged Care
The school encourages opportunities for students to engage with the community by meeting with elderly people at a local Aged Care Centre, either by organizing school incursions or excursions to the center. Students and staff spend time with each of the elderly attendees by conversing or playing simple games, or different activities, and being a Godly witness. The High School Choir also arranges an annual visit to sing and present special songs at the end of the school year.
Inter-School Sport Competitions (e.g. Netball)
Each year, the school sports coordinator will seek to enter teams into day competitions in either netball or soccer with other local schools in the area. The sports may vary each year depending on competition availability, location, or student interest. There is a try-out process to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all students. Family and friends can attend the competition events.
